Festival de cinéma et concours de musique pour commémorer les Droits Humains

10.12.2012 :: Plusieurs journées d’activités académiques et culturelles ont étés organisées par le PNUD pour sensibiliser la population de la Guinée –Bissau sur les Droits Humains et l’égalité de genre, dans le cadre des 16 jours d’activisme contre la violence envers les femmes et de la Journée Internationale des Droits Humains.

Le 27 et 28 Novembre le PNUD a promu, en collaboration avec ONU Femmes, un séminaire sur ces deux thématiques à l’Université de Droit de Bissau. Le même jour a démarré un festival de cinéma au Centre Culturel Franco-Bissau-Guinéen, suivi de débats sur différents articles de la Déclaration Universelle des Droits Humains.

Pendant quelques semaines le PNUD et UNIOGBIS ont mis en place des concours de photos, peinture, journalisme et de musique sur les mêmes sujets. Les prix des plusieurs catégories ont été annoncé pendant la grande finale du concours de musique qui a eu lieu au Centre Culturel Franco-Bissau-Guinéen et qui a consacré le jeune chanteur Abu comme vainqueur.

Guinea-Bissau has fulfilled its obligations on Destruction of anti-personnel mines in mined areas

06.12.2012 :: The official declaration that Guinea-Bissau has fulfilled its obligations under article 5 of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their destruction (Ottawa Convention) was announced officially December 6, on the occasion of the 12th Meeting of the States Parties to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention at Geneva by the Director of the National Mine Action Coordination Center, on behalf of the Government of Guinea-Bissau. Guinea-Bissau ratified the Convention on 22 May 2001, which entered into force on 1 November 2001. Over the last years Guinea-Bissau made every effort to identify all areas under its jurisdiction or control and have ensured the destruction of all mines in these areas. This has been a combined effort with all stakeholders to destroy these mines laid during conflicts dating back to 1963, Border conflict since 1980s and 1998/99 War. Upon declaring completion, from January 2000 to June 2012, Guinea-Bissau and its partners have addressed 50 mined areas representing a total of 6.5 million square meters of area in which anti-personnel mines were known or suspected to be present. This work culminated in the destruction of 3,973 anti-personnel mines, 207 antitank mines, and 309,125 pieces of unexploded ordnance. Guinea-Bissau has benefited greatly from UNDP support as principal development partner  with  UNMAS and UNOPS since May 2000 to July 2012 . Although Guinea-Bissau has fulfilled its obligations under Article 5 of the Convention, Battle Area Clearance tasks remain as well as an expected residual contamination which will be addressed by the Government.

First in-take career course for 14 private lawyers concluded at the National Judicial Training Center

04.12.2012 :: Guinea-Bissau Bar Assotiation, in collaboration with the National Centre for Judicial Training (CENFOJ), handed-over the certificates for the 1st in-take career course for 14 trainee private lawyers, held at CENFOJ premises. For design and delivery of the training, both legal national institutions were supported technically and financially by UNDP’s Programme Rule of Law and Security through the Millenium Development Goals Fund. All trainees received also a copy of the Criminal Law Collection, published and donated to CENFOJ by the Justice Reform Unit of UNIOGBIS.

The ceremony was attended by CENFOJ Deputy Director, Mr. Julião Insumbo Vieira, UNDP Rule of Law and Security Programme National Legal Expert, Mr. Kanil Lopes, Vice -Chairman of the Bar Association, Dr.Waldemar Martins and a representative of the trainees, Mr. Hôchiminh Faustino Mendonça.

Peace and sustainable development to celebrate International Volunteers Day

Under the theme “Volunteers work for peace and sustainable development”, the National Volunteers Committee supported by several partners including the United Nations Volunteers Programme organized various activities to celebrate the International Volunteer Day, December 5.

Over more than a week, several activities took place both in the capital Bissau and the regions:

  • Cacheu: ecological walk in the National Park of Cacheu (Parque National das Tarrafas de Cacheu) for 30 children of the primary school of Cacheu.  Reforestation of mangrove conducted by the school children (2100 seeds of mangroves were planted).
  • Buba: ecological walk in the Natural Park of Cufada Lagoon (Parque Natural das lagoas de Cufada) for 30 children of the primary school of Buba. Workshop on the transformation of agricultural produce (production of jam and traditional medicine) for 10 women and 10 men;
  • Mansoa: Workshop on the transformation of agricultural produce (production of manioc flour) for 10 women;

In Bissau:

  • In partnership with Camara Municical de Bissau, a pilot project on sustainable management of waste was put in place in the neighborhood of Missira, Mindara and Bairro Militar. Different garbage bins were placed in 8 points of each neighborhood to separate the waste that can be re-used (aluminum, plastic bottles and glass bottles) from the waste that cannot be re-utilized. 30 Volunteers were trained on sustainable development and sustainable management of waste to sensitize the population of the above mentioned neighborhood.
  • During the day of the 5 th of December, a celebration took place in Bairro Militar: among the activities realized there was the presentation of the “State of the world Volunteer Report” and the Picture Book on IVD 2011, exposition of the agricultural produce made in the regions of Cacheu and Quinara (Buba), recycle workshop, premietion of the logo of the NCV draw by the school children of Bairro Militar; theatre performance on human right ans sutainable development.
