Today is the United Nations World Oceans Day; celebrating the role of the oceans in our everyday life and inspiring action to protect the ocean and the sustainable use of marine resources.

2021 World Oceans Day highlights the theme of The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods.

Healthy oceans are critical for sustaining life, eliminating poverty and promoting prosperity. In Guinea-Bissau, the ocean is an imperative source of live and livelihoods, and an intrinsic part of the country’s culture and heritage.

The Blue Economy includes all economic activities related to oceans, seas, and coasts. Fisheries, aquaculture, maritime transport, and coastal tourism are all important examples of key Blue Economy subsectors in Guinea-Bissau.

Globally, the Blue Economy contributes about $2.3 trillion per year to the global economy. If the ocean were a country, it would be the world’s 5th biggest, after Germany, in terms of GDP.

UNDP Guinea-Bissau is partnering with the government, development partners, CSOs, academia, and the private sector to collectively strengthen our efforts to capitalize on Guinea Bissau’s small island development state potentials and tap into the country’s vast Blue Economy opportunities, to create jobs, spur economic growth, trade, and tourism that builds a more sustainable and resilient future for the country and its citizens.
